IMPLEMENTATION AND DEMOSTRATION

The objective of Work Area 6 is to promote the implementation of the outcomes of TRUST at a European level through validation and demonstration in pilot cities and regions. The participating cities/regions are considered as pioneering and very determined to radically change their existing water cycle systems and their associated governance and financial models to more sustainable systems. They also cover the broad spectrum of frameworks in which cities throughout Europe are operating (urbanisation, water scarcity, climate change and energy, transient populations).
Current water cycle systems are challenged by recent EU policies to enhance energy efficiency, whilst maintaining and further improving their high level of service. Cities throughout Europe are developing and implementing ambitious programmes to implement these sustainability policies. TRUST aims to support these cities. While drafting the project, the consortium has mapped the challenges and research needs of European cities, thereby using the outcomes of WSSTP surveys, such as a questionnaire and various workshops and reports on Urban Areas (www.WSSTP.eu). The participating city partners play a key role in the project and have committed, among other things, to drive the research group towards the development of applicable solutions and actively make their gained experience available to other cities and to policy makers.
The TRUST Approach
Work Area 6 will demonstrate the outcomes of Work Area 1 - Work Area 5 in the pilot cities on real life scale, including the associated governance and financial system adaptations. Cities will provide support from their investment programmes. The usual research partner of the city will act as liaison for TRUST to ensure efficient communication.

For each of the pilot cities a roadmap of interventions to a sustainable UWCS will be developed and demonstrated. The roadmapping process developed in Work Area 1, the metabolism model from Work Area 3, the interventions from Work Area 2 (socio-economic) and Work Area 4 and 5 (technical) will be applied, demonstrated and implemented in the water plans and policies of the pilot cities. The training material developed in Work Area 7 will be used. Outcomes of the demonstration in the cities will be input for the generic guidelines to be developed in Work Area 5.

To ensure efficiency, the research outcomes are demonstrated in clusters of cities addressing similar main challenges. Work Package 6.1 deals with the water scarcity cluster: Algarve (Portugal), Athens (Greece) and Reggio Emilia (Italy). Work Package 6.2 deals with the green cities cluster: Amsterdam and Schiphol (Holland) and Hamburg (Germany) and Work Package 6.3 is the the urban - peri-urban cluster: Oslo (Norway), Cities in Scotland, Maputo (Mozambique) and Bucarest (Romania).

To ensure widespread dissemination of the outcomes, a TRUST Cities Platform will be created in Work Package 6.4 to share common experiences between the TRUST city clusters and between other international projects and networks such as the IWA Cities of the Future group and the EC Green Capitals.
