Sandnes is a municipality located on the southwest coast of Norway. It has about 70 000 inhabitants and is the fastest growing city in Norway. The city covers an area of 304 km2, and consists of farmland, forest and natural landscape and densely populated urban areas. The city is facing challenges like sea level rise and high intensity rainfall because of climate changes. This increases the risk for flooding, especially in the city centre which is located at a very low elevation. Due to anticipated climate changes, population growth and urbanization, and aging infrastructure, the water and wastewater department of the municipality is focusing more and more on sustainable urban drainage systems and other solutions to prevent flooding hazards and ensure the safety and health of the city residents.
